Allergic diseases > Allergy to insect stings
How can you avoid further stings?
Taking a few simple precautions can help you avoid further stings and allow you to enjoy the sunny summer days:
  • Remember that insects are more aggressive when they are close to their nest or hive. Try to avoid these areas as much as possible.
  • Don’t walk with bare feet in the grass during the summer. Insects can be hidden in the grass and there is a risk of stepping on them.
  • Some wasps nests can be built underground; take care when walking in the fields and orchards
  • Don’t use strong perfumes, deodorants or other cosmetics (particularly sweet smelling ones). Insects are instinctively attracted by them.
  • Don’t dress in bright coloured clothes as they may attract insects mistaking you for a flower!
  • Don’t eat sweet cakes, juicy or over ripe fruits or drink sweet drinks or even beer when outside as wasps are attracted by them.
  • During picnics, keep the food covered as much as possible (preferably in tightly closed containers).
  • Don’t drink from cans or glasses that have been left open outside. Insects might have fallen in so there is a risk of being stung when swallowing them together with the drink.
  • Mowing the lawn or other kind of garden activities should be avoided or done with caution.
  • Avoid strong physical activities outdoors. Perspiration can attract insects, particularly wasps.
  • Stay calm if an insect approaches to you. Avoid abrupt movements or swatting away the insect as this may make it become aggressive.
