Managing acute symptoms induced by food

The other crucial aspect for the treatment of food allergy is knowing what to do if you develop acute symptoms, should you eat the problem food again. This is essential, especially if previous ingestion of food has caused you an anaphylactic reaction manifested by swelling of the throat,, severe asthma attacks and/or severe drops in blood pressure and loss of consciousness. In the case of a new attack, your life might depend of your ability to react quickly and to follow the steps of the emergency plan set out by your doctor. Most of all it is essential that you are aware of when and how to use epinephrine (or adrenaline) which the doctor has prescribed for you. Also, you should be aware that whenever you develop such severe reactions you should refer yourself to an emergency service, even if your symptoms have disappeared after you have used the epinephrine injector.

To learn about the treatment of anaphylaxis and the use of epinephrine visit the section Anaphylaxis on our website.

For other manifestations of food allergy (not related to a life-threatening risk), where you have accidentally ingested or come into contact with the food, it is important that you consult your doctor or administer the treatment that he has recommended for these situations as soon as possible.
