What is food allergy?

Some people are predisposed to develop allergy and may experience allergic reactions to certain foodstuffs. Food allergy does not occur because the foods contain toxic or harmful substances. A food item that can trigger an allergic response is termed an Allergenic food.

Allergenic foods are perfectly safe for people, who do not suffer from allergies and they can consume them without any fear of an allergic attack. The problem in food allergy is not the food itself, but the immune system of the person who develops the allergic reaction. In people predisposed to allergy, some foods are falsely perceived by the body’s immune system as being harmful. In an attempt to protect the body, their immune system mounts an immune response against the food, trying to eliminate it from the body. It is this response which causes the allergy symptoms that the person experiences, when the allergenic food is eaten.
