Hormonal rhinitis

Hormonal rhinitis can occur during hormonal changes in the human body: during pregnancy, menopause or in untreated hormonal diseases. The symptoms are generally sneezing blocked or runny nose. The diagnosis is usually established through blood analyses and after exclusion of the other, major types of rhinitis. It generally regresses after the hormonal state returns to normal: e.g. rhinitis due to pregnancy disappears spontaneously after delivery.

Atrophic rhinitis is an extreme form of hormonal rhinitis which can occur after the menopause. This disease can induce nasal hyperreactivity, crust formation, runny nose (rhinorrhea) and, paradoxically, a feeling of nasal obstruction Nasal endoscopy which is an examination using a slender nasal telescope, shows atrophic mucosa.
