Preventing new attacks
If you have experienced an anaphylactic attack some measures can be taken to prevent its recurrence.
  • Consult an allergy specialist who can identify what caused your attack
  • Review together with your doctor all situations and places where you are exposed to a risk of coming into contact with the allergen
  • Make sure to avoid these situations (your doctor should advise you on how to do it; but you can find some advice in various sections on this web site, for example, allergy to foods, allergy to drugs, allergy to insect stings  etc.)
  • If you also suffer from asthma always carry your bronchodilator inhaler (salbutamol spray) with you
  • If you are under treatment for heart conditions or hypertension (in particular beta-blockers or angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors) consult your doctor or cardiologist and ask him if it would be possible to switch to another class of drugs
  • In almost every country there are now patient associations for people with anaphylaxis. Join one of these associations. It can help you in learning about and fighting your disease. Also it allows you to meet other people suffering from the same condition, enjoy their company and learn from their experiences. Ask your doctor about these associations in your country.
