Sensitization: mechanism by which the body, after a first contact with an antigen, acquires a capacity for reaction to it.
Serotherapy: injection of animal or human sera with high amounts of specific antibodies which can neutralize a microbial antigen, a toxin, a bacterium, venom or virus. Serum: the liquid fraction of the blood plasma. Artificial serum is a physiological solution used in sub-cutaneous or intravenous injections.
Skin Test: cutaneous inflammatory reaction test for diagnostic purposes. It is performed by introduction into the body, by scarification, of a toxin or a product to which the subject may be sensitized.
Spasm: a sudden, violent, involuntary, non-rhymthic contraction of one or more muscles. Specific Vaccination: synonymous for "desensitization".
Squamata: a thin layer of scales which detaches from the surface of the skin.
Steroid: general name given to hormones secreted by the adrenal glands. Synonymous with corticosteroid.
Steroid Therapy: therapeutic use of adrenal hormones; in particular cortisone. Symptoms: any manifestation of a disorder or a disease which makes it possible to predict, to contribute to diagnosis, to reveal a condition, or an outcome.
Syndrome: collection of clinical symptoms
and/or signs which can be observed in several different
pathological conditions and with no specific cause.
