Allergy symptoms are caused by an allergic inflammatory process in
the affected organ. Symptom relieving drugs can reduce allergy
symptoms, or even make them disappear, in a matter of hours or
days. However, treatment of the underlying inflammation takes a
longer time.
Therefore, in the absence of anti-inflammatory treatment or if the
drug treatment is stopped too early, the symptoms will soon come
back. With inhaled allergens in particular, it is essential that
you continue your treatment for as long as the allergen is in the
air.
The pollens of some plants have a short season when their airborne
levels are high but with other plant pollens or house dust mites,
treatment must be continued for long periods as allergens remain at
high levels in the air.
Regular, daily therapy for a long period of time will keep your
symptoms under better control than intermittent administration of
drugs only when you feel your symptoms are bad.
