Managing allergy > Allergen avoidance
How can you reduce exposure to animal allergens?
The best way to reduce contact with domestic animal allergens would be to get rid of the animal completely. By keeping the pet, even if kept outdoors, you will still be exposed to high levels of allergens (for example by playing with your pet in the garden, allergens come in contact with your clothes and in this way you carry them inside the house). Even after removing the animal from the house, allergens will continue to be present for several weeks or months.
Tip: if you are allergic to cats or dogs, changing the breed will make no difference to your disease since all dog or cat breeds are allergenic. As the allergen is not in the hair itself having a short hair breed does not help you to reduce the level of allergens in your house.

DO…
  • Restrict the access area of the pet in the house
  • Replace the beds and soft furniture in the rooms where the pet access has been restricted (it is very difficult to remove animal allergens from these items, so they can continue to constitute an allergen reservoir even if the animal no longer enters these rooms)
  • Remove carpets, especially wall-to-wall carpets because they accumulate the animal allergens
  • Leave the floor uncovered, if possible. Hard, uncovered floors (wooden, linoleum or ceramic tiles) can be easily cleaned
  • Ensure that your pet is washed regularly. Some studies have shown that weekly washing can reduce the amount of allergen they produce
DON’T…
  • Allow the pet to have the run of the house
  • Allow the pet in the bedrooms or rooms where the allergic person spends most time
  • Let the animal come into contact with you
  • …clean your pet’s cage
